Sabah Bamboo Orchestra

The Sabah Bamboo Orchestra was formed in 2003 or earlier, i cant recall the date or the big shot that officiated the formation, it was some state minister or other... :) these pictures or rather the pictures below was taken on the night of June 21st, 2003 at Dewan Besar, Dewan Bahasa & Pustaka during (if not mistaken) the ensemble's first ever public concert ....

Tribute to KKSO



"I am Proud Of This Young and Very Talented Group Of Musician " was what DCM Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, whos is also the Minister Of Culture, Tourism & Enviroment in his address to the Musician Of Kota Kinabalu Symphony Orchestra. A fitting tribute to the the 120 strong Symphony that he offically launched on th 31st May 2004. He also assured support for the upcoming program undertaken by the Symphony, a workshop that is being plan to be held later this year.
On another note, he has suggested to Chairman Liaw (KKSO Chairman) for a Christmas Concert by KKSO in December.

Multiple Orchestra Claim

Actually Sabah has more than an Orchestra. If my info are correct, there are three group claiming to have form a so call ensemble fit to be call an Orchestra.
1. KKSO (Kota Kinabalu Symphony Orchestra) which is feature here.
2. City Symphony Orchestra(Refer site)

Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Chong kah Kiat commending Sabah’s only orchestra, the 120-strong Kota Kinabalu symphony Orchestra, for a fine performance during its New Year concert held at the Tun Mustapha Auditorium, in Kota Kinabalu, on Saturday, Chong who is also Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister, also announced that the orchestra would perform in the scenic Simpang Mengayau in April as apart of the State’s tourism promotion campaign. The orchestra under the chairmanship of Liaw Lam Thye was also encourage to put up a Christmas performance end of this year. Accompanying the orchestra during Sunday’s concert was the 70-member Tenom and Keningau Children Choir under guest conductor from Hong Kong, Frankie Wai, Picture should Chong and wife Ivy receiving souvenirs.

Headline: KK Symphony Orchestra promises inspiring concert

KOTA KINABALU: The Kota Kinabalu Symphony Orchestra (KKSO), under the baton of local renowned conductor Yap Ling, will once again bring city folks an inspiring concert.
After a debut performance on May 31 this year, the KKSO will have another concert – this time for two days on Jan 1 and 2, 2005.
And for the first time, the Kota Kinabalu audience will be treated to a live performance of a two-piano concerto, a double violin concerto and a 70-member strong Tenom Keningau Children Choir accompanied by a full orchestra.
The KKSO New Year concert will be held at the Main Auditorium of the Menara Tun Mustapha here at 7.30pm.
The guest-of-honour will be Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat, who is the Deputy Chief Minister-cum-Minister of Tourism, Culture & Environment.
The concert is supported by the Sabah Tourism Board.

New Year Concert.... The 120 - member Kota Kinabalu Symphony Orchestra (KKSO) performing Beethoven's Ode To Joy during its New Year Concert held in Tun Mustapha Auditorium on saturday. Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Chong Kah Kiat announced that the orchestra would perform in the scenic Simpang Mengayau, Kudat in April as part of the state's tourism promotion campaign. Accompanying the ochestra during the concert was the 70-member Tenom and Keningau Children Choir under guest conductor from Hong Kong, Frankie Wai.

YAP LING (Professional Certificate (HONS) ARAM, LRAM, ARCM, LRSM) is a versatile musician who performs, teaches, conducts and arranges music. After obtaining his LRSM in 1986, he secured a Yayasan Sarawak Student’s loan which enabled him to enter the Royal Academy of Music, London (RAM). He was later awarded the Sarawak Foundation Scholarship and the RAM’s Alec Templeton Scholarship. At the RAM, Yap Ling studied under Clarence Myerscough (violin), Adrain Leaper & Denise Ham (Conducting) and Roger Steptoe (Orchetration/composition). Before he went to London, he has participated in consultation lessons, masterclasses, music camps and workshops in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong. While in London , he became a member of the Chelsea Symphony Orchestra (concertmaster 1988), the Chelsea String Quartet, the London Chinese Ensemble and the PianoTrio. Since then, Yap Ling has been to Germany, Italy, France, New Zealand, Australia, Moscow (Russia), USA and China for upgrading and performances.
In 1990, he participated in the first World Youth Music Camp in Kuala Lumpur and the first Pacific Music Festival in Japan where he played under the baton of Leonard Bernstein. He was selected to represent Malaysia as a violin tutor in the 1991 ASEAN Youth Music Workshop in Jakarta, Indonesia. He was a string tutor at UNIMAS. He lead and founded the Panggau Libau Strings and the Sibu Strings. Because of his contributions towards developing the music standard in this part of the world, he was conferred the Associate of the Royal Academy of Music (ARAM) in 1997. He was the Artistic Director for the 1st and the 2nd Sarawak Music Camp in Kuching and Sibu respectively for 1999 and 2001. He has played the Butterfly Lovers Violin Concerto with the Monash Sinfonia of the Monash University in Melbourne, Australia in 2000.
The most recent appearance as soloist was with the Penang Symphony Orchestra on 2 June 2002. Before he moved to Kota Kinabalu this year, he was the conductor of Orkestera Dewan Suarah Sibu (ODSS), the Sibu Hwai Ang Methodist Church Symphony Orchestra, the Wong Nai Siong School Concert Band, the Masland Methodist Church Band and the Hwai Ang Methodist Church Young Adult Fellowship Choir. Presently he is the leader of the Virtuoso Players and conductor of the Virtuoso Ensemble and the Shern En Methodist Church Youth Choir

Frankie Wai Kar Seng - he said he was on his vacation in Sabah when Yap Ling got hold of him and ask for his kind assistance and feature in The New Year Concert and lead the Children's Choir. Back in Hong Kong he's a well known choral instructor.

Classical music lover here will get to see a full orchestra performance organised bt the Kota Kinabalu Symphony Orchestra (KKSO) next week.
Its chairman, Liaw Lam Thye, said the two day performance would feature the first ever full orchestra concert consisting of a two piano concerto, a double violin concerto and a 70 member strong Keningau Children Choir.
He said the concert would be held at the main auditorium of Menara Tun Mustapha at 7.30pm on Jan 1 an 2 pm on Jan 2.
Among the repertoire of classic will be Mozart's Concerto No.10 in Eb for two pionos, K365 in the saturday concert and J.S Bach's concerto in D Minor for two violins on Sunday.
He said the 120 member strong choir under the baton of Yap Ling would wrap up the concert with Beethoven's Ode To Joy.
